A few days ago, Elle Saile contacted me, for the first time since the plan was accepted. I had absolutely no idea why she wanted to meet with me, but okay. Now I was standing in front of the city council’s large work building. Ok, only one floor is theirs, but still! 28th floor. Somehow, the elevator managed to make it all the way up with no stops. What, did people take the stairs now? I was greeted by a very nervous looking assistant.
“Uh, you can’t be here right now.”
I almost laughed. “Elle Saile and I have a meeting. I need to meet her.”
“Not right now!” She was getting more and more freaked out. I could tell she was trying to stay calm, but it wasn’t working very well.
“I have somewhere to be, miss.” I attempted to walk past her, but she pulled (yes, pulled) me back. “What are you doing?!” I asked, annoyed. This was seriously getting old. I was about to say something else when I noticed the yellow tape around an area behind her. And I saw paramedics everywhere. I guess this is what that ambulance I heard was for… What the hell was going on? A policeman came over to us and asked we exit the building. What the heck?! And after walking down 28 floors worth of stairs, because of course the elevators are shut off, I still have no idea what just happened.
Two days later
Something weird is definitely going on. I asked Miss Saile when we could set the meeting for now, and she said we didn’t have to meet and it was nothing major! Like, what? We were going to meet, so it must have been somewhat important! I’ve decided to put it out of my head, and focus on the protest we’re working on instead. Their problems aren’t my problems! It was an special day because Lexie and I both have work off. The protest is planned for a few days from now, and mostly everyone at Lexie’s work has agreed to join! All my friends are going to try to make it, including Dani.
I smiled so wide as I read the latest text from Dani.
“Hey….” Lexie asked suspiciously. “Who’s that?”
“What do you mean?” I did know what she was talking about, but I wasn’t going to tell her, at least not yet!
“Who just texted you or emailed you, or whatever! You were smiling so much!”
I laughed. “I’m a happy person, Lexie. I smile. And for the record, it was just Dani, and I was happy cause she said that she can make it, ok?” Dani would never be ‘just‘ anything to me. She couldn’t be simply, just Dani. She was so much more than that. But Lexie needed to believe it, believe I wasn’t in love.
“Ok, fine! I’m going to look up ideas for cool slogans.” Lexie said. Thank Watcher she didn’t figure it out.
“We’ve been working all day! Let’s have a break, I’ll get the snacks, you turn on the tv.”
Lexie went to turn on the tv, and I searched for our snack stash. “Umm, Adelaide, you’re gonna want to see this.”
I sighed. “One second!”
“No, no one second. Get over here!”
I groaned, walking over. What could be so important- and I dropped the pretzel bag I was holding once I saw the screen. Attempted murder? “Lexie, where is this?”
“Uh, it’s channel-”
“No, not the channel! When and where did this happen?”
“I think they said two days ago, in some place in San Myshuno…”
Oh. My. Watcher. That was what was happening when I tried to see Elle Saile? Watcher. And now it was all over the news. I’m sure someone up there isn’t very happy about that. Holy crap!
“Lexie, I saw this. 2 days ago, in San Myshuno. The aftermath.”
“Yeah, I saw it. There was police tape everywhere.” On cue, my phone beeped. I held it up. “Elle Saile.” I announced to Lexie.
“Did you see the news yet?” She asked immediately. Oh, did I now? I bet it was on every screen right now!
“Hell yes, I saw it.” I did not care one bit about professionalism right now. “You didn’t even think to say something?”
“We didn’t think it would get out.” That was a crap answer and she knew it. Attempted murder was the most interesting thing to happen in forever. All the news agencies would be all over it! And, you can’t really cover something like this up.
“Why did it happen?” I asked. I felt that I deserved answers. I had worked with these people for a little while, and I was partly associated with them. I could almost hear her cursing inside her head. I know I’d be right now!
“He was one of the people most involved with the bad deals. We suspected he might be working for both sides, and I guess it caught up with him. Once he recovers, he’ll be going to jail.” I heard her words, but most of all, I heard bad publicity. This was so damn bad for them.
“Why did you want to meet with me in the first place?”
“Just needed your signature on some things. We can do it tomorrow.” Great. This was the absolute last time I was dealing with them.
“I’ll be there.” I almost hung up, but realized I had one more thing to say. “This is it, though. I’m done with you guys.” I pressed end. She didn’t get to say anything else.
I had no idea how messed up the San Myshuno political scene was. I was glad to be leaving it, for my own town’s scene. There was no way it could top attempted murder.
“What happened?” Lexie asked.
“I’m going to be done with them.”
She smiled. “Thank goodness! I knew they were crap.”
I sat down next to her and proceeded to tell her everything else I’d just heard, like I always do. We’ve always been so close that anything I know, she knows. She’s my go-to person to talk about anything with. Nothing has changed in our relationship for years, even when we didn’t live in the same house. I just wonder what will change as the years go on and we start families. But for now, everything is just how it’s always been.
A/N: I’m trying out bold for phone calls now! You’ll have to tell me if it’s better than italics, thegraeyone, because you said it was too italic-y last time! You guys are the ones reading it, not me, so whatever’s easier to read! 🙂
