Chapter 3.48: That Winter

“Ha, can’t hit me,” Lexie yelled, grabbing more snow, shaping it into another snowball.

I laughed, lining up my shot. “Are you sure?” As I threw the ball, she swerved out of the way just in time.

“Haha, I’m sure!” Lexie replied, laughing.

She threw her ball and I ducked, laughing. “You can’t hit me either,” I laughed.

Dani was at work right now, so it was just Lexie and I, in a snowball fight. Neither of us had even gotten a hit off yet.

“Dang,” Lexie screamed as her snowball whizzed just past me.

As I reached down to create my next snowball, Lexie’s next snowball hit me. “Ugh,” I yelled, brushing the snow off. I finally managed to hit her five minutes later, and I screamed in victory.

“Yes!” I screamed, dancing around. Sure, Lexie was still winning, she’d hit me four times, but this felt like a win.

“Ok, Addie, you got your shot,” Lexie said, smiling, “so can we go in now?”

As the thrill of landing that hit wore off, I could feel the cold, crisp winter air and I nodded.

“Hot chocolate?” Lexie asked once we got in.

“Yes! That’s sounds so good!” I replied, taking off my snow coat and pants, left with just a tank top and some pants.

“Ok, I’ll just put on some warm clothes and then start up the hot chocolate,” Lexie replied.

“Ok,” I said, warming up by the fireplace. We’d never had a fireplace before, and definitely had no use for one, without winter. I was so glad I’d put this in, though, it was going to be so useful throughout winter. We still hadn’t taken our Winterfest decorations down, but we usually left them up for a little while. I heard Lexie come back down the stairs, and she walked over to me.

“I’ll be joining you in a second, let me just get the hot chocolate going,” she said.

I nodded, still really cold. A few minutes later, Lexie plopped down on the sofa, announcing that the hot chocolate would be ready in 6 minutes.

“…and I’m putting in marshmallows!” She finished, warming up her hands.

“I didn’t even know we had marshmallows,” I said, surprised.

“I got some the other day,” Lexie replied, “You guys didn’t have any, so I went over to my place to get my bag of marshmallows.”

“You walked out in the snow?!”

“Yeah,” she said, “it’s not snowing anymore, so I just put on boots and ran over.” I nodded. Her place wasn’t that far away, but the extended patio that connected it to this house wasn’t inside.

“Anyway,” she said, “I’m gonna go check on the hot cocoa.”

As Lexie walked back to the kitchen, I saw the door open out of the corner of my eye.

“Dani!” I exclaimed, running over to her, “I thought you didn’t come home until 7?”

“They let us out early since a big snowstorm is coming, apparently,” she smiled, “Do I smell…”

“Hot cocoa!” Lexie finished, walking out, “Come on, it’s ready!”

“My Watcher, how do people do this?!” I exclaimed, grabbing hold of the edge again.

Dani slid up behind me, laughing. “I have no idea.”

We watched another couple whiz by, and I looked over to my wife.

“Ok, let’s try this again,” I said. She nodded, and we slid across the ice, slowly. I pushed off the edge, feeling somewhat confident in my new ice skating abilities. It was my first time ever ice skating, and Dani’s too. I don’t there had been ice skating rinks for years. Without winter, I suppose it would have been a little weird.

“I’m doing it!” I exclaimed, having managed to have stayed on my feet as I got back over to the edge.

“Let’s go in three…two…one!” Dani said, and we pushed off at the same time.

“This is fun!” I said, skating right next to her.

“Yeah, I think I’m getting the hang of it,” she replied, and ended up sliding past me a little.

I felt myself getting off balance and in an attempt to steady myself, I grabbed onto Dani and we were suddenly falling towards the ground.

“Crap, Dani, are you ok?” I turned over, looking at my wife, who was just quietly giggling.

“Yeah, I’m fine!” I started laughing too, once I realized she was fine and the shock wore off.

“Do you want to get some warm apple cider? Or anything warm?” she asked, and I swear my whole face lit up. It was cold, and apple cider was so good!

Yes,” I replied, “but isn’t that more of a fall thing?”

“I guess, but that stall is selling some anyway…”

“Let’s do it,” I said, we tried to get up, and slowly made our way off the ice rink.

“10, 9, 8, 7…” Lexie, my friends, and my wife & I were all huddled around the tv, counting down until New Years.

“6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! Happy New Year!” I screamed, cheering, as I threw my hand up in the air, much to the surprise of Zoe, who was sitting right by me.

I smiled, and got up to go over to Dani. I slid in right next my wife and cuddled up against her.

“Happy New Year, Dani,” I whispered.

“Happy New Year, Adelaide.”

“Ok guys, I have news,” Zoe announced, pausing for a little while, before yelling out, “I’m pregnant!”

I’m pretty sure everyone’s eyes in the room widened. “Oh my Watcher, Zoe, congratulations!” I exclaimed.

“Did he know, or…” Raini trailed off, looking at Zoe’s boyfriend.

“Yes, he knew!” Zoe laughed, “I told him a few days ago.”

“It’s true,” her boyfriend said, smiling.

“I’m about 5 weeks along,” she added, “so I didn’t really want to say anything in case something happened, but I know you guys would be there for me if something did, so it just made sense to tell you.”

“Of course,” Lyric said.

“Let’s have a dance-off!” Zoe exclaimed.

“A what now?” Raini asked.

“A dance-off. To show off our dancing skills and have fun!”

“What if I can’t dance?” Raini asked, laughing.

“Neither can I, it’s just for fun!”

Lexie turned on a station and Lyric cringed. “Oh Watcher, not electronica!”

“Uh, what’s wrong with electronica?” Zoe asked, “I think it’s nice!”

“Just no. I can’t stand this kind of music, do alternative.”

Lexie turned it to alternative, and nobody objected.

“Look at these moves,” Zoe screamed.

“Oh yeah? Watch this!” I tried my best to do something cool, and started laughing.

“That looked pretty good, actually,” Raini said.

“Oh yeah, guys, I’ve got exciting news too!” I smiled, “Well, exciting to me, anyway.”

“Tell,” Lyric said, as Zoe and Raini nodded in agreement.

“I’m going back to work! Dani and I talked about it and I decided that I’m ready. I need something to do!”

“That’s great!” Raini said, “What will you be doing?”

“I’m going to apply to be the mayor’s assistant.”

“You ever think you’ll want to be the mayor?” Lyric asked.

“Maybe someday, but not now. I’ve been away from the scene for years, I’ve gotta get back into it.”

“Hey everyone, I’ve got drinks!” Lexie yelled out. She was practicing her mixology skills, as they went hand in hand with cooking. She’d just finished putting up the pop up bar. I figured we’d be up for a few hours more, especially with some drinks. With all of my sister’s cooking skills, I assumed her drinks would be amazing too.

“What kind?” I asked my sister.

“Whatever you want,” she replied, “I got plenty a few days ago.”

“Hand over the Juice on the Rocks,” Raini said.

“Do you just have apple juice, you know, since I’m pregnant?” Zoe asked.

“Yeah, I think so,” Dani told her, “let me show you.”

We all settled down, just chatting about life and everything, while the music played in the background. It was a simple night, and the start of a brand new year. I feel like it’s going to be amazing.

    1. Yeah, the previous heiresses’ friends were almost nonexistent so this is definitely different! (remember Selena’s best friend, Annalise? She was in like two chapters, so you probably don’t lol)

      1. Yeah, this is really different! I tried to keep up with the family in Dellie’s gen, but then the other heirs completely lost touch with them. So, only I know the extended family tree now!
