World Events Timeline

edit 09/06/2021 – I’m not sure if I plan to keep this as part of the story, but in case anyone found this really interesting, I’m leaving the page up in its original form (the last time something was added was July 2019).

This is all alternate history. None of this shows what I really think will happen in the future, it’s just for fun. This is not meant to offend any nationality, religious belief, political ideology, ect. While I am going to try and make this realistic in the way that it could possibly happen, I’m not an expert on any of this so it may not all be 100% legit. It is being made for a story so these events, while created in context with the world today, are 1000% fake. There’s no way I could put in a full history of every single country so if there’s a country or area you’d like to see me work on adding details of, just tell me in the comments and I’d gladly work on that! 😄 This is a currently ongoing timeline that is being updated with new events frequently as the 500-year gap between real life and the story gets filled in. There are obviously a lot of gaps right now in the timeline, but don’t worry, I’m working on it. 🙂 Points where the countries are ‘talking’ is inspired by and in the style of mapping videos – it’s not how actual leaders of the countries would talk, it’s more to show what’s going on in a more fun and creative way.

I hope you all enjoy this – the story of the world from real-life present day (21st Century) until the present day in the story (26th Century.)

September

• Sept. 2 – Slovene and Croatian leaders meet in Slovenia’s capital of Ljubljana to discuss their ongoing border dispute. No agreement comes out of the meeting. At the EU meeting, Germany suggests that the two countries should try to reach an agreement by 2025, but both Slovenia and Croatia refuse to agree to those terms, saying it’s crazy. Italy declares their neutrality towards any future conflict.

October

• Oct. 7 – Irish nationalists lead a protest in Northern Ireland, wanting the unification of Ireland.

November

• Nov. 8 – A large anarchist group in Greece begins a revolt against their leaders. Greece asks for the EU’s help to put down the revolt, as they aren’t in the best condition to deal with an all-out uprising right now. » Beginning of the Second Greek Civil War

• Nov. 10 – A handful of leaders from EU countries get together to discuss the situation in Greece. France wants to help Greece out because they don’t want to watch an EU country collapse without doing anything, but Germany knows that the EU isn’t in the best state and doesn’t want to affect multiple other nations for a ‘small’ uprising in Greece. By the end of the meeting, France ends up convincing Germany to help, but the other countries involved in the meeting choose not to put their people into a battle that doesn’t affect them.
• Nov. 12 – The anarchists officially begin fighting after finalizing their plans for the last few days.

December

• Dec. 1 – The anarchists realize that they aren’t just fighting Greece anymore, as they figure out they’re also fighting French and German forces. They instantly contact the nationalist group and ask them to join the revolt, knowing all they have to do is make Greece collapse. After a bit of persuasion, the nationalists agree.

• Jan. 1 – A group of Greek socialists, tired of their government’s incompetence, revolt as well, surprising both the anarchists and nationalists, who weren’t excepting any more help.
• Jan. 11 – France and Germany confront Greece about the situation, not understanding how things could get so out of control with the support they are giving the government. The Greek government admits things were worse off then they said. Albania, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria ask Germany what the plan is for the Greek refugees. Albania says if there’s no plan in a week, they’re closing their border.
• Jan. 21 – Cretan nationalists begin uprising.
• Jan. 26 –  Greece – properly known as the Hellenic Republic – collapses.

• Feb. 8 – The Republic of Crete is proclaimed, a day after the island is united under the Cretan nationalists.

• Sep. 12 – the iPhone XII and its new counterparts are revealed – and they’re all waterproof (up to 8 feet deep for one hour.)

November

• Nov. 19 – The USA puts regulations on vaping – it’s now illegal for anyone under 18. Black market sales for vapes skyrocket.

• Jan. 30 – Social media startup Sprout begins to attract a lot of attention in the USA after its version 2.18 update.

• Mar. 4 – An anti-communist/pro-democracy group leads a revolt against their totalitarian leaders in Cuba. 62 are left dead and countless others injured.

May

• May 15 – Saudi Arabia backs a coup in Iran that places a leader slightly more favorable towards Saudi Arabia in power. It is not public knowledge that Saudi Arabia backed them, though it is suspected by many.
• May 19 – Gaming becomes an official part of the Olympics.
• May 27 – the influential people in Iran who want the old leaders back in power meet in the city of Ahvaz in secret. They start discussing plans to put that regime back in power.

June

• Jun. 19 – Those influential Iranians who back the old regime invade the capital of Tehran and re-overthrow the government. It’s no secret that the Middle East is a bit unstable, so while many nations were concerned about the recent fluctuations in power in Iran, nobody was extremely surprised.

July

• Jul. 11 – Iran’s ‘new’ government figures out that Saudi Arabia backed the coup. They are… extremely pissed.

August

• Aug. 8 – Iran declares war on Saudi Arabia. People can’t say they didn’t see it coming…

• Feb. 7 – A small group begins a communist uprising in Indonesia.
• Feb. 18 – It took 11 days for the Indonesian government to end the uprising – the communist group only consisted of around a couple thousand; it surprised everyone that they had even been able to last eleven days. It ended with 130 dead and 464 injured. Even though the threat was easily suppressed, the world leaders couldn’t help but wonder what appeal communism might still have. Thirty-three years after the fall of the Soviet Union, communism did not hold the threat it once did… but the ideology had not disappeared from the world.

April

• Apr. 30 – Somalia’s current government is taken over by socialist revolutionaries and is renamed to the Socialist State of Somalia.

October

• Oct. 18 – The United States and other countries of the UN meet in Venice to discuss the situation in Somalia – and more generally, communism and socialism – in a low-profile, unofficial meeting; they do not invite Russia… or China. However, Russia is used to being left out of certain things and discovers the meeting’s existence through their spies. What happens is… this.

USA: So, we are here today to discuss the apparent fact that communism has not ceased to exist as hoped…

Italy: I assume you are alluding to the failed uprising in Indonesia and the successful one in Somalia?

USA: Correct.

Russia: *walks in* Hold on, shouldn’t I be allowed in this meeting?

USA, France, Britain, Italy, others: …

Russia: It’s because this meeting is about communism, isn’t it? Well, may I remind you that I am no longer a communist nation and haven’t been for 33 years?!

Britain: …no, that’s not the… um… only reason…

Russia: So you admit it’s a reason?

USA: Let’s not play dumb here – of course it’s a reason! You were a powerful and feared communist nation for most of the 20th century!

Russia: … I’m not denying that, but it’s been 33 years. I’m not even communist anymore and yet the past still seems to hang over my head! Will nobody ever see me as anything other than the Soviet Union?!

*silence*

France: We don’t see you as that anymore…

Russia: No? Then why wasn’t I invited to this meeting? Because you still see me as the face of communism, that’s why!

USA: Come on, you know none of us are on the best terms with you anyway –

Russia: And at first that was understandable! Of course decades of tension between the Soviet Union and you western countries was not going to disappear just because of its dissolution – and I guess it still hasn’t. I am ready to move on. When you are, let me know.

Britain: Russia, it’s more complicated than that, you know it is. We would love to move on…

Russia: Alright, then are you going to let me join this meeting, officially?

Britain: No… but –

Russia: Thought so. I’ll just get the information later. You know, for what you all still think of me, I might as well be communist.

France: Of course we’re glad you’re not –

*Russia walks out*

USA: Well, that just went…great.

Italy: Are we still continuing the meeting?

USA: …no, let’s continue it another time. I don’t think anyone here wants to continue today…

November

• Nov. 15 – The earlier October meeting is continued; the leaders talk through video chat instead of going to a physical location since they could not find a logical date where they could all meet again in person. Luckily, there are no interventions in this meeting.

• Sep. 7 – Chinese spies discover that North Korea is in plans to test new nuclear bombs.
• Sep. 24 – After much debate between Chinese officials, they agree (some more than others) to enlighten Russia on what is going on in North Korea as well.

October

• Oct. 2 – Russia and China give North Korea an ultimatum – stop testing nukes immediately or they will invade. They don’t want the world to fall into nuclear war any more than anyone else. It is around then that the international community gets wind of all this happening. Many are scared that if China and Russia do invade, North Korea will use nukes against them… and who knows where that would lead.
• Oct. 4 – The USA demands that China and Russia do not invade North Korea no matter the circumstances since nobody knows what North Korea might do.
• Oct. 5 – China and Russia meet up to discuss what they should do about the USA’s ‘threat’ to their plans. China wants to go ahead with the plan anyway, but Russia is a bit wary of worsening their (already not-great) relationship with the USA, which could lead to more sanctions. Chinese and Russian leaders leave the meeting without an agreement.
• Oct. 19 – The Chinese missile detection system goes off after the North Koreans shoot something off heading for the Sea of Japan. The Chinese shoot down the North Koreans’ missile and send them a harsh warning to stop. They contact the Russians to ask if they’re still in the agreement to teach North Korea a lesson by force. They don’t get an answer back.
• Oct. 20 – Russia tells China that they’re out, but what they don’t say is it’s because they really, really can’t take any more sanctions right now. With Russia out of the plan, China has to seriously think about whether they want to attack North Korea on their own.
• Oct. 26 – China contacts the USA, asking what they expect them to do about the very real problem that is North Korea if they cannot attack without pushback. U.S. leaders are pleasantly surprised that China is at least contacting them instead of going for it – and they tell China to just keep an eye on the North Koreans for the moment while they collaborate to find a better alternative to invasion. The USA decides to put some more troops over in South Korea in case the North Koreans are planning something there.

• Dec. 7 – China notices through surveillance that the North Koreans are suspiciously piling up troops at the North/South Korea border. Guess who also notices this? The United States! They’re wondering if maybe China and Russia had the right idea and they should just invade North Korea to get rid of the threat.

• Apr. 5 – The USA now requires people to go through a mental health evaluation before purchasing a gun.

June

• Jun. 30 – A new species of fish is found in the Mariana Trench during a Canadian research mission.

February

• Feb. 26 – China’s government gets overthrown by nationalists tired of their current situation and wanting a switch back to the old way of rule. Many people would much rather have an imperialistic government than their then-current communist one, so they accept the new rulers. The Lei Dynasty begins their rule. As the word gets out that China’s communist government had gotten overthrown, many other communist nations start to worry about nationalist uprisings in their own countries.

March

• Mar. 9 – the U.S. reaches out to China’s new government. The world has been on edge, not knowing the details of what happened during China’s governmental change and is not sure if an imperial rule is better than a communist one, though many say it is.
• Mar. 12 – China’s first emperor in 122 years replies back to the U.S. It will begin a new era of trade between the two countries.

• Apr. 5 – The U.S. officially recognizes non-binary as a third gender option legally.

August

• Aug. 18 – Syria collapses due to a civil war among other problems the nation had been facing. The countries around it are at a standstill, not sure what to do without breaking laws, but also not sure what to do in general.

• Aug. 24 – Iraqi and Turkish troops run into each other in what used to be northern Syria. They were both scouting out to see what was going on there and both decide to ignore the others’ presence since neither of them should be there.

September

• Sept. 2 – NATO meets to discuss what should be done about Syria.
• Sept. 5 – They decide to split the lands between the neighboring countries of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Turkey.
• Sept. 13 – Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Turkey agree to the new borders after a few days of disputing between one another. The world relaxes now that this has all been worked out peacefully.

• Feb. 9 – A group leads a march for LGBTQ+ rights in Andorra La Vella, the capital of Andorra. In Andorra, there are some types of same-sex partnerships that are legal, but marriage is not legal yet. The marchers wanted legal same-sex marriage in Andorra as well as laws that protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination.
• Feb. 23 – The group leads another march, this time in Canillo.

April

• Apr. 19 – China dissolves into civil war between three major parties – the current government of the Lei Dynasty, the group that believes a different family should be sitting on the imperial throne, and the communists, who have been working on earning support ever since they were overthrown in 2034.

• Oct. 15 – The taxonomic classification of Protista is officially split into nine new kingdoms, but it is only taught in that detail at the college level; high schools still use the classification of Protista due to the complexity of it all.

• Jul. 16 – Jupiter’s 68th moon is discovered by NASA astronomers.

• Jun. 1 – Andorra passes a new law that legalizes same-sex marriage.
• Jun. 20 – Austria follows Andorra’s example, also legalizing same-sex marriage.

• Mar. 23 – The eleven-year war in China ends, with the Lei Dynasty retaining their power. Now begins the long process of cleaning up from the war…

• Jun. 8 – Taoism experiences a resurgence in China – after the long war, peace and simplicity are appealing to many.

• Nov. 10 – All nations in the EU vote to legalize same-sex marriage. Nations that refuse to comply will be kicked out of the EU – all of them decide to agree. Besides, by then, there are only a few countries that haven’t legalized it yet. It becomes world news, though, and plenty of LGBTQ+ parades were held throughout the world celebrating this vote.

• Dec. 27 – Turkey invades Greece because they believe the Greek government might have had something to do with the deaths of one of their top officials, which Greece denied. (Technically, someone from Greece did cause that death, but not someone from the government.)
• Dec. 29 – Greece somehow was able to recover from the surprise attack and even pushed back Turkish forces in some locations.

• Jan. 1 – It’s been less than a week since the war between Turkey and Greece started and the world has an unspoken agreement to not get involved. Nobody wants World War III and would really like to keep that from happening.
• Jan. 19 – Greek forces take Istanbul.
• Jan. 20 – Turkey surrenders; their treaty says that Greece can take all the land they ‘took’ including Istanbul.

February

• Feb. 3 – Greece renames themselves to Neo-Byzantium and renames Istanbul back to Constantinople. Their victory against the Turks is a high point for them. It’s only in the last few decades that the country had really gotten on its feet and this shows the world they can fend for themselves. Obviously, Turkey is a bit pissed but they can’t do much about it right now…
• Feb. 12 – Turkey gets invaded by Iraq. Iraq was probably trying to take advantage of the fact that Turkey just lost to the Greeks.

March

• Mar. 11 – Iraq and Turkey make a peace treaty as they have both lost many people to this war and both were ready for it to end (especially Turkey.) The world is impressed that nothing has ended in a nuclear war yet.

July

• Jul. 29 – Most countries of the world join the newly created Safety of Humanity Organization and sign the treaty to never have nuclear war no matter how far things get. It took a LOT of diplomatic push, but the international community gets both the United States and Russia to sign the treaty – which is a big deal as they are the two countries with the most nukes. With the few recent wars, many are relieved to know this pact was received positively. Even though it’s still very tentative, it’s a win for the world and the future of humanity.

October

• Oct. 30 – All the countries in the Safety of Humanity Organization sign a pact to not create any more nuclear weapons.

– 23rd Century –

April

• Apr. 26 – The First Point of No Return occurs, a large geomagnetic storm. The world ‘shuts down’ as all the communications networks fail. Trade comes to a standstill and many of the already unstable countries collapse completely in the aftermath. Even the relatively stable countries are heavily affected by this and are forced to make some changes in how they deal with climate change. Many of the newer technological advances are set back and the world ends up regressing to around the start of the Industrial Revolution – and some countries go back farther than that.

May

• May 2 – A group in Russia seizes this chance to obtain power – which they do, quietly and more quickly than even they expected. In the recent decades since the beginning of the 23rd century, Russia’s economy had begun to worsen as the country started to run out of its easier-to-access oil… and new developments in technology made the world less dependent on it. And those are the conditions in which this group, wishing for a return to back to the Soviet days, around 325 years prior, came to be. However, they learned from their predecessors, and have chosen to let their people have more autonomy than they were given in the earlier Soviet Union, and hoped to implement soviet democracy – not totalitarianism. Many people do not even know that the Russian government was overthrown, as connections are haywire… but as news begins to (slowly) travel through the world, through letters and the rare phone call, the one thing that nobody expected was a return of the Soviet Union. (For clarification, this group currently only has control over Russia’s lands, not the entirety of the previous Soviet Union.)
• May 19 – The new leaders of the Soviet Union get together to discuss their next moves – and how else they can use this unexpected to their advantage.
• May 30 – The Soviets begin their invasion of Kazakhstan.

June

• Jun. 3 – the Kazakhstani troops finally begin to group together to fight against the Soviets. Nobody was exactly prepared for an attack right then; a few months ago, things might have been different, but the effects of the First Point of No Return caused global chaos. At first, Kazakhstani troops believe they are fighting Russia – it’s not until they see the flag of the Soviet Union flying among their opponents’ troops that they truly realize what is going on.

July

• Jul. 6 – Kazakhstan surrenders and becomes part of the Soviet Union. Soviet leaders decide they’ve done enough conquering for now and should work on helping out their country.
• Jul. 18 – The rest of the former Soviet republics and the former Eastern Bloc has, by now, realized that the Soviet Union is back and since they like their independence, they meet up and create an alliance to protect them from the Soviets, The Niepodległość Defense Pact of 2247, of which Poland became the leader of, as they, historically, had a reputation for being invaded and were determined to not let it happen again.

August

• Aug. 24 – The Soviets implement new reforms targeted to speed up their recovery from the First Point of No Return and for one of the only times in history, extreme state control actually helps – it takes everyone working together to get things done… if everyone fends for themselves, things don’t get done in the big picture. And in a dramatic reversal of the 20th century, people began to want to go to a communist country.

• Sept. 4  – Socialist revolutionaries in France begin a civil war, tired of the mass unemployment, famine, and record levels of inflation.

• May 12 – Election week in the Soviet Union begins, in the form of soviet democracy.
• May 19 – The leader of the 2247 Russian Revolution and prominent leader in the Soviet Union’s government was not re-elected – and he does not reinforce his power, unlike Lenin and other previous Soviet leaders. So far, democracy had won out in a communist society, maybe for the first time.

Historical Context of the Regressive Transient Period:

The time period after April 26, 2247, was filled with instability – everywhere. Without rain, crops were destroyed and inflation rose to unimaginable levels. It also brought about the rise of the Soviet Union as the world’s sole superpower – and a lot of things combined to make that possible, starting with their leader’s new reforms that focused the country back on agriculture that – ironically – made it so that the Soviets had more food than basically any other country. That is not to say that it was a utopia there because it wasn’t, but it showed that some people would choose relative stability over relative freedom. It reversed the odds – countries that had based their economy and everything on industrialization were suddenly at a disadvantage since none of those technologies worked anymore… (this section is being elaborated on.)
